Ruth questions…
Shutting the computer off at night vs. rotary the monitor off?
I’m trying to be more energy- conscious.
I always turn the monitor off when it’s not in use, but is it better just to turn it off? I like how convienent it is just being able to switch the monitor on and have the computer be ready to go.
Is there something that I can do to save more energy without really rotary it off?
*Thanks!*

Rotary a Windows logic “OFF” (from ‘Start> Turn Off Computer…’ button) is not the best way to place your logic away for the night (or extended periods) and forcing a shutdown with the power button is NEVER a excellent option; only a last alternative.
It prevents Windows from ‘organization’ logic files to get ready for the next start-up, and may, over time, cause file corruption; slow down; even break Windows.
A much better method is ‘Hibernation’.
Shutdowns by the ‘hibernate’ method gives several repayment: It’s a near zero power state; all ‘Startup’ folder bits and pieces are already loaded, Windows background air force are already ‘up’, and all open work moves to the hard drive, yielding really quick start-ups.
And if power is lost (storms, etc.) the document or picture you were working on won’t be lost like it would be in ‘Standby’ mode, and the logic will resume just where you left it.
Go to Start> Control Panel> Power Options> Hibernate: here check the box.
To show this option when rotary unit off; Start> Turn Off Computer> HOLD down ‘Shift’ key & ‘Standby’ becomes “Hibernate’: tick that.
(Some systems have a ‘crescent moon’ key to go right to hibernate).
Note: emergency power disconnect can be done without any affect on the logic, but unfiltered power spikes will liable cause hurt to the logic.
To start up, push the power button, and Windows will resume right where you left it, bada bing.

Nancy questions…
When leaving computer is it best to leave?
in a screensaver mode or turn the desktiop off by the switch on monitor? Where I would save on energy and power and general wear and tear?
admin answers:
I always turn my computer of from the ‘start’ menu and from something that happened a couple of nights ago I am glad that I do.
We had a thunderstorm and there was a power surge on the telephone line which blew out my modem, which we replaced. Friends just down the road had left their computer on – and the same bolt of lightning blew the whole lot! They are having to wait for a aver on their house insurance.
I still couldn’t be bothered to disconnect the modem each time – but it’s worth considering.

William questions…
Power saving feature on the computer?
if i set my computers power save on “turn off monitor after 1 minute” will it save me more energy if combine it with really rotary off my monitor with its power switch
or
if i turn off my monitor and just not use the power save feature, would that save about the same amount of energy?

Hi there,
Turn your monitor off with the power switch mainly if its an older model. Its the same as a TV on standby, the standby set alight uses power, but rotary it off completely will prevent that.
One thing to note is wear and tear, if you are constantly rotary your monitor on and off several times in the day, you are going to wear it out much quicker than ‘normal’
My advice would be to set the power to turn off after 2 hours or so, just in case you have had to pop out for some reason and not able to return to turn it off any time soon.
