Macbook screen keeps fading to black! No clue how to fix it!!!!!?

Okay, I just got a new Macbook, and already it’s going nuts. The screen will fade to black, and sometimes even FIGHT to stay black. I’ve told it not to sleep AT ALL in the energy saver preferences, and this really is getting annoying when I’m trying to do homework. I’m thought this may be related to it heating up, but it also does it even when it’s not doing anything, or even that hot.
Any answer would be momentously appreciated, this is a work laptop and programming gets annoying when you have to fight to keep your screen lit up every five minutes.
It does this on both battery and plugged power. It doesn’t seem like it has anything to do with the lid, but I’m not even sure how I could fix that. The lid is magnetically shut.
Another update. Figured out that it couldn’t be the laptop lid switch, because if it was that the macbook would Sleep, not just fade to black. And it doesn’t fully fade to black, but the LCD lights turn off so that I can only barely see the screen, and when I turn the brightness back up, sometimes it fights, and keeps going back down for a while. I don’t know what’s going on with it.

For some reason the Macbooks and Macbook Pros running Leopard have occasionally have been having issues with the going to sleep, not going to sleep, not waking from sleep, etc. If you have an external drive, make a Time Machine backup to the external drive, then place in your Leopard install disc that came with it and do a complete Erase and Install. After it’s done installing open Time Machine, then go into the Applications folder, hold down the Control key, and click on everything you want to restore. Do the same for everything else you want to restore. This way your starting with a fresh set of logic files so you can pretty much rule out the possibility of a degraded plist or something like that messing with your show sleep settings.
I realize this is kind of a pain but it’s usually the first thing the techs at the Apple store will tell you to do. If you’re still having these problems after doing a clean install, chances are it’s a hardware issue and will be covered under the warranty. Take it to the nearest Apple store and tell them what’s going on and they must be able to help you. It’s going to be a while before you get your laptop back (usually between 4 and 8 days) so hopefully you have another machine that you can use while it’s being checked out. Be aware that on the off chance it turns that all of the hardware is working fine, they’ll payment you about $50 for the diagnostic test they run to find out what the problem is.
Sounds like it might be a switch causing it to fade out into black. Such as the lid-open/closed switch. Check with Apple about that, and they must be able to help you out with it.
Are you working on battery power or is it plugged in? Apple laptops dim the screen when you’re running off of the battery, and depending on your ambient lighting conditions it might just look like it’s fading all the way to black. If you’re working outside, you probably will have to give up and go back indoors.
There might be some brightness controls on your upright (such as Fn+Up arrow, or something similar) that you can try by when the screen dims.
Otherwise, you probably need to call Apple’s tech support. I hear they’re really more helpful than a lot of other companies’ tech support.
