I grew up in a freezing cold house, (sometimes my glass of water by my bed froze) I walk everywhere and didn’t even go abroad on a plane till I was 20.
When entire cities in Vagas and Tokyo don’t turn their advertisment billboard lights off at night, why should I sit in a sweater the perpetual twighlight of a (mercury filled) energy saving lightbulb sorting my green and brown glass out.
It gets dark at 4.00 in the evening here, I’m at least deserving to be nice and (even slightly uncomfortably) warm. Global warming isn’t even proven.

I will agree with you that Vegas and Tokyo are sucking up more power every day than your house could even dream of using. You shouldn’t have to sit in the cold. No one wants to give up our modern conveniences, and that’s what the debate is about. How do we continue to have all of these things, but do it sustainably? Sustainability means we meet our needs, without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. Obviously oil and coal are not sustainable. So keep your heater on, but help us find a way to do it sustainably. Help us make sure that your kids and grandkids don’t grow up in a freezing cold house like you did, or worse, because we used up all of our resources?

P.S. Global warming is more accurately described as global climate change. It doesn’t mean it won’t be cold anywhere anymore – the patterns of weather we have always known will shift (snow in Baghdad, anyone?)

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/world/5448494.html

P.P.S. If we wait until everyone is convinced that global warming is happening, it will be a little late. Whether we’re causing it or not, no one would argue that we’re disrupting the way this planet has always operated, and that we’re using resources at an alarming rate. We can change that now without all the politics and arguing.

why are there not more LED lights?

it would save sooo much energy if all lights were all replaced with LED lights.

why don’t the make led tubes that replace florescent tubes? imagine how much energy there would be saved if all the lights in all the offices were changed with that.

and even more so, if they got rid of the mercury lights that are in all street lights and parking lot lights, if they made LED bulbs that fit in there instead that maybe used 30 watts instead of 400 or whatever they use. make those darn mercury lights illegal and make a law all government lights be LED.

why isn’t it like that?!?!?!

admin answers:

Well, I think the biggest problem is that LEDs tend to be fairly directional.

Another problem, I think, is that the technology changes so fast that it might make people hesitant to get involved, except for simple and inexpensive things like flashlights. I mean, 10 years ago your only choice was the Nichia LEDs. They aren’t very bright, so you needed large clusters. Then a few years later the Luxeons came out, and they were a lot brighter. But a few years later, the Cree XREs and Seoul P4s came out, which are even brighter and more efficient. And that’s where we are now. It probably won’t be too long before even better LEDs are out. I know Seoul’s working on one that will put out 700-900 lumens on 10 watts, which is much more than what current LEDs are capable of. Nobody wants to make something that’s obsolete as soon as it comes out, or even before it comes out.

Another problem is that color rendition isn’t as good with LEDs. By that I mean it can be harder to see things that are certain colors, particularly brown. That’s okay for flashlights, but totally unacceptable for street lights.

How do environmentalists justify compact fluorescent lights?

Yeah, they save energy and last a long time. That is good good for the environment. However, they are not good for the people who use them, at least, once they need to be disposed of, due to the high levels of mercury within each unit.

admin answers:

They use 75% less energy and despite having mercury in them cause less mercury and other pollutants to get into the environment.

When coal fired plants produce energy they pollute with many gasses mercury among them I will add another link read them both and then let the mercury thing go each bulb has around 4 mg. If you haven’t changed to a digital thermostat you have a mercury swicth in your themostat that has over 200 mg of mercury, almost half of neon signs have more mercury than cfl’s do.. Let it go

In answer to the question they save energy by giving off the same amount of lumens for about 25% of the energy needed by incandescents and because of the reduced energy need and the fact that the mercury in cfl’s can be easily recycled rather than being spewed all over by a power plant they reduce pollution.

If you insist on no mercury get rid of the old thermostats, be very careful what type of neon sign your around, just to be safe don’t eat fish and for heavens sake quit using incandescents so the power plant will stop spewing it all over the place.

San Jose, Bakersfield and Simi Valley rounded out the top three fastest-growing solar cities in California based on a report released by SunRun and PV Solar Report as part of the Q4 and year end solar sales and installation reports from PV Solar Report. The top ten California cities all demonstrated that they had added more home solar systems in 2011 than other California cities. Lancaster, Fresno, Corona, Murrieta, Rocklin, Hemet and Apple Valley completed the top ten list.

“We thought it was important to not just look at which cities have the most solar installations, but also those that are growing the fastest,” said Stephen Torres, founder and managing director of PV Solar Report. “While Apple Valley may not have the most solar in the state, its solar installation numbers grew by almost 70 percent in 2011.”

SunRun and PV Solar Report advised that cities like San Jose were not a surprise as leaders in California solar cities, but newcomers such as Hemet and Apple Valley have shown that solar projects are expanding to different geographic locations. The report additionally advised that many of the homeowners in the cities cited chose to bring a solar installation to their domain through a solar power service rather than buying the panels. The report specifically cited the top city, San Jose, as having 648 homeowners choose solar service in 2011, compared to the 312 who purchased their panels.

“The cost of solar is coming down, which makes it more affordable for families in a more diverse range of cities,” said SunRun President and Co-founder Lynn Jurich. “At SunRun we’ve also seen solar expand to more median income communities because our service allows homeowners to make the switch for zero or very little money upfront, and they lock in a low rate for clean electricity.”

The top ten list of fastest-growing solar cities is based on the California Solar Initiative’s (CSI) database of residential rebate reservations for the 2011 calendar year with CSI data being collected from state utilities such as SDGE, PGE and SCE.

The best way is to stop using it altogether, but that is near impossible, so your next best bet is to reduce the use of energy.

One of the best ways I know of is oscillating lights. By having an oscillator that can turn the light on and off rapidly (1000 times a second?), you save 50% of the energy used for that light.

Also, solar panels are still a favorite, especially now that they are coming out with better and cheaper panels.

The only other thing I can think of is for you to look up ‘alternative energy‘. Good luck with whatever it is your doing!

Well, it looks like the creators of the CHIP Solar Home got their wish. After entering their zero net energy home in the 2011 Solar Decathlon in Washington, D.C., last fall, the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) and the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) team said on their blog that they hoped the solar home would be able to “show another group of kids what tomorrow looks like.”

It will indeed. The CHIP Solar House has caught the eye of the the folks at the California Science Center in downtown Los Angeles, and for the next five months, will be one of the center’s main exhibits. A ribbon-cutting celebration, welcoming the home, was held at the California Science Center at Exposition Park with Los Angeles city council members, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and officials from Hanwha Solar in attendance.

image via SCI-arch Caltech

“SCI-Arc is an education and innovation anchor of the CleanTech Corridor, helping LA lead in sustainable design and architecture,” Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said during the ribbon cutting for the building. “I commend SCI-Arc and Caltech’s innovative use of solar power for the next generation of clean energy residential properties.”

CHIP stands for Compact, Hyper-Insulated Prototype Solar House. The 750-square-foot structure wears its insulation on the outside, rather than stuffed in between the home’s frame, giving it a quilt-like appearance. The home is powered by 45 solar panels, enough to generate three times more electricity than the home uses. Those solar panels also provide juice to the Xbox Kinect that serves as the master command center for the home. Residents can turn lights and appliances on and off just by pointing at them. A 3-D camera also sees occupants of the house and can automatically turn lights on and off as they move from space to space.

image via SCI-arch Caltech

The CHIP Solar House house will be open to the public for free tours through May 31. Tours are available weekdays from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and weekends from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. More information is available here.
